An adverb answers “how?”, “when?”, “where?”: szybko — quickly, dobrze — well, tutaj — here. You need them even for “I speak Polish well” or “I’m cold”.
Most adverbs come from adjectives through two simple patterns. Learn them and your vocabulary doubles with no extra memorising.
Pattern 1: adjective → -o
Adjectives in -ki, -gi, -chy and many others form adverbs in -o: szybki → szybko, cichy → cicho. This is the easy one.
| Adjective | Adverb |
|---|---|
| szybki | szybko |
| cichy | cicho |
| długi | długo |
| drogi | drogo |
| łatwy | łatwo |
| ciepły | ciepło |
| późny | późno |
| wesoły | wesoło |
| częsty | często |
| głośny | głośno |
| tani | tanio |
| daleki | daleko |
Examples in sentences:
- Mów trochę ciszej, dziecko śpi. — Speak a bit more quietly, the baby is asleep.
- Szybko się uczysz! — You learn fast!
- Mieszkam daleko od pracy. — I live far from work.
Pattern 2: adjective → -e / -ie
Adjectives in -ny and some others take -ie, softening the consonant: ładny → ładnie, wczesny → wcześnie. There is no strict rule for -o vs -e, so use the tables and learn each adverb together with its adjective.
| Adjective | Adverb |
|---|---|
| ładny | ładnie |
| dokładny | dokładnie |
| bezpieczny | bezpiecznie |
| punktualny | punktualnie |
| spokojny | spokojnie |
| wygodny | wygodnie |
| uważny | uważnie |
| wczesny | wcześnie |
| piękny | pięknie |
| grzeczny | grzecznie |
Examples in sentences:
- Pracuj spokojnie i dokładnie. — Work calmly and carefully.
- Autobus przyjechał punktualnie. — The bus arrived on time.
- Wstaję wcześnie, o piątej. — I get up early, at five.
Irregular: dobrze, źle, dużo
These are the most frequent adverbs, so learn them by heart:
| Adjective | Adverb | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| dobry | dobrze | r → rz |
| zły | źle | z → ź, ł → l |
| miły | miło / mile | ł → l |
| duży | dużo | |
| mały | mało |
Examples in sentences:
- Mówisz już dobrze po polsku. — You already speak Polish well.
- Źle się czuję, idę do lekarza. — I feel unwell, I’m going to the doctor.
- Mamy dziś dużo pracy. — We have a lot of work today.
Adverb or adjective?
A classic mistake: Mówisz dobry po polsku. A verb is described by an adverb: mówisz dobrze (you speak well). For states like cold, noisy, nice Polish uses jest + adverb: Jest zimno (it’s cold), Jest mi zimno (I’m cold).
Examples in sentences:
- Jest mi zimno, zamknij okno. — I’m cold, close the window.
- W magazynie jest głośno. — It’s noisy in the warehouse.
- Było miło cię poznać. — It was nice to meet you.
“In Polish” — po polsku
Languages use po + an adverb in -u: Mówię po polsku — I speak Polish. Not “polskim” or “w polskim”.
| Polish | Meaning |
|---|---|
| po polsku | in Polish |
| po ukraińsku | in Ukrainian |
| po angielsku | in English |
| po rosyjsku | in Russian |
Adverbs of time, place and degree
These don’t come from adjectives — just learn them:
| Polish | Meaning |
|---|---|
| teraz | now |
| zaraz | in a moment |
| potem | then, later |
| wcześniej | earlier |
| zawsze | always |
| nigdy | never |
| czasem | sometimes |
| rzadko | rarely |
| tu / tutaj | here |
| tam | there |
| wszędzie | everywhere |
| bardzo | very |
| trochę | a little |
| prawie | almost |
| razem | together |
| osobno | separately |
Examples in sentences:
- Zaraz wracam! — Back in a moment!
- Nigdy nie pracowałem w nocy. — I have never worked nights.
- Prawie skończyłem, jeszcze pięć minut. — Almost done, five more minutes.
Comparison
Adverbs have comparative and superlative forms: szybko → szybciej → najszybciej. The most common ones are in the table; for all the rules see “Comparatives and superlatives in Polish”.
| Adverb | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| szybko | szybciej | najszybciej |
| często | częściej | najczęściej |
| wcześnie | wcześniej | najwcześniej |
| dobrze | lepiej | najlepiej |
| źle | gorzej | najgorzej |
| dużo | więcej | najwięcej |
| mało | mniej | najmniej |
Examples in sentences:
- Przyjdź jutro wcześniej, o szóstej. — Come in earlier tomorrow, at six.
- Najlepiej zadzwonić rano. — It’s best to call in the morning.
Where the adverb goes
Usually before the verb or at the end of the sentence: Szybko się uczysz = Uczysz się szybko. Whatever comes last gets the emphasis.
Common mistakes
- Mówisz dobry po polsku → Mówisz dobrze po polsku.
- Mnie jest zimno → Jest mi zimno (short form mi).
- Mówię polskim / na polskim → Mówię po polsku.
- bardziej dobrze → lepiej.
