Description of the patterns

Pattern 1: verbs ending in -ać
Examples: pisać (to write), czytać (to read)
They use the endings: -ę, -asz, -a, -amy, -acie, -ają
This is the most typical group of verbs of the first conjugation.

Pattern 2: verbs ending in -eć, -ąć, -ić
Examples: jeść (to eat), płakać (to cry), mówić (to speak) – for some verbs with this ending the endings are similar to pattern 1, but with some changes.
Endings: -ę, -esz, -e, -emy, -ecie, -ą

Pattern 3: verbs ending in -yć, -ić (with a soft stem)
Examples: uczyć (to teach), słyszeć (to hear)
Endings: -ę, -ysz, -y, -ymy, -ycie, -ą

What is a “soft stem”?

  • The stem of a verb is the main part of the word without the infinitive ending.

  • A soft stem is when the stem ends in a soft consonant or a sound that gets softened (for example consonants like -ś, -ź, -ć, -ń).

  • In Polish this often causes changes to the stem during conjugation, especially in the present tense.

Pattern 4: irregular verbs (nieregularne)
Examples: być (to be), mieć (to have), iść (to go)
These verbs have their own forms that need to be learned separately.
