Almost every Polish verb comes in a pair: robić — zrobić, kupować — kupić, brać — wziąć. This is verb aspect — imperfective and perfective. English has nothing quite like it, so it is the first real “Slavic” hurdle for most learners.

In this lesson: when to use which aspect, how to recognise the pairs, and how aspect works in every tense.

Imperfective vs perfective: the difference

The imperfective (niedokonany) describes a process, a repeated action or something that lasted. The perfective (dokonany) describes a result — one action that was (or will be) completed.

MeaningImperfectivePerfective
a process in progressWczoraj pisałem raport.Wczoraj napisałem raport.
repetition, habitCodziennie dzwonię do mamy.Jutro zadzwonię do mamy.
how long it lastedCzytałem dwie godziny.Przeczytałem w dwie godziny.
a sequence of actionsJadłem i oglądałem film.Zjadłem, umyłem naczynia i wyszedłem.

Examples in sentences:

  • Kiedy wszedłem, szef rozmawiał przez telefon. — When I came in, the boss was on the phone (process).
  • Szef porozmawiał z nami i wyszedł. — The boss had a word with us and left (result, sequence).
  • Zawsze płacę kartą. — I always pay by card (habit).

Pattern 1. A prefix: robić → zrobić

Most often the perfective is the same verb with a prefix: z-, s-, na-, prze-, wy-, u-, za-, po-. Which prefix is a matter of memory, not logic.

Examples in sentences:

  • Ugotowałam zupę na dwa dni. — I (woman) cooked soup for two days.
  • Nauczyłem się jeździć wózkiem w tydzień. — I learned to drive a forklift in a week.
  • Policz jeszcze raz, proszę. — Count it once more, please.

Pattern 2. A different suffix: kupować → kupić

Here the imperfective is longer (-ywać, -iwać, -ować, -ać) and the perfective shorter. Remember: kupuję — I’m buying, kupię — I’ll buy (future!).

ImperfectivePerfective
kupowaćkupić

otwieraćotworzyć

Examples in sentences:

  • Zawsze zamykam drzwi na klucz. — I always lock the door.
  • Zamknąłeś okno? — Did you close the window?
  • Wracam z pracy o szesnastej. / Wróciłem późno. — I get back from work at four. / I got back late.

Pattern 3. A completely different word

A few of the most common pairs are different words. Learn them as pairs, like in a dictionary:

ImperfectivePerfective
braćwziąć
mówićpowiedzieć
oglądaćobejrzeć
widziećzobaczyć
kłaśćpołożyć
siadaćusiąść

Examples in sentences:

  • Biorę zawsze dwie kanapki. / Weź parasol! — I always take two sandwiches. / Take an umbrella!
  • Mówi szybko, ale powiedział coś ważnego. — He talks fast, but he said something important.
  • Oglądaliśmy mecz. / Obejrzeliśmy cały sezon. — We were watching the match. / We watched the whole season.

Aspect in each tense

The key rule: perfective verbs have no present tense. Zrobię looks like a present form but means “I will do”. So “Teraz zrobię” means “I’ll do it now”, not “I am doing it now”.

TenseImperfectivePerfective
presentrobię— (zrobię = future)
pastrobiłem / robiłamzrobiłem / zrobiłam
futurebędę robićzrobię
imperativerób!zrób!
conditionalrobiłbymzrobiłbym

Examples in sentences:

  • Teraz piszę maila. Za chwilę go wyślę. — I’m writing an email now. I’ll send it in a minute.
  • Będę pracować w sobotę. / Zrobię to w sobotę. — I’ll be working on Saturday. / I’ll do it on Saturday.

Signal words

Some words almost always pull a particular aspect:

ImperfectivePerfective
codzienniew końcu
częstojuż
zawszenagle
zwykleod razu
cały dzieńw godzinę
przez godzinędo piątku
długoraz
ciąglewreszcie

Aspect in negatives and commands

Negative commands almost always use the imperfective: Zamknij okno! — Nie zamykaj okna! (see lesson 8). In the past, a negated perfective means “never got it done”: Nie zapłaciłem rachunku — I never paid the bill.

Aspect pairs at work

PolishMeaning
Przez cały dzień pakowałem paczki.I was packing parcels all day.
Spakowałem już wszystkie paczki.I’ve already packed all the parcels.
Co tydzień wysyłam pieniądze rodzinie.I send money to my family every week.
Wysłałem dokumenty mailem.I sent the documents by email.
Podpisujemy umowy w biurze. We sign contracts in the office.
Podpisz tutaj i gotowe.Sign here and you’re done.

Common mistakes

  • Codziennie zrobię… is wrong — repeated actions take the imperfective: Codziennie robię…
  • Teraz kupię chleb means “I’ll buy bread now”. If you are already at the till, say Kupuję chleb.
  • Będę zrobić does not exist: perfective verbs never combine with być (lesson 7).
  • Czytałem książkę doesn’t mean you finished it. Finished — Przeczytałem książkę.
