Particles are small words that name nothing on their own but change the tone of a sentence: chyba (probably), przecież (but… after all), właśnie (exactly), aż, dopiero. Without them Polish sounds like a textbook; with them it sounds like real speech.

The trickiest are aż / dopiero / tylko and już / jeszcze, which English often translates the same way (“only”, “still”), while Poles keep them clearly apart.

Czy — the question particle

Czy at the start of a sentence turns it into a yes/no question: Czy masz czas? — Do you have time? In speech it is often dropped and the intonation does the work: Masz czas? In formal situations, with pan / pani, keep czy.

Examples in sentences:

  • Czy mówi pan po polsku? — Do you speak Polish? (formal)
  • Czy jest jeszcze praca na sobotę? — Is there still work for Saturday?
  • Masz klucz? — Mam. — Have you got the key? — Yes.

How sure are you: na pewno, chyba, raczej

From “definitely” to “maybe” — these particles show how certain you are:

ParticleMeaningExample
na pewnodefinitelyNa pewno przyjdę.
chybaprobably, I thinkChyba pada deszcz.
raczejrather, probablyRaczej nie zdążę.
możemaybeMoże jutro?
naprawdęreallyNaprawdę nie wiem.

Examples in sentences:

  • Chyba się spóźnię, jest korek. — I think I’ll be late, there’s a traffic jam.
  • Na pewno oddam ci jutro. — I’ll definitely give it back tomorrow.
  • Raczej nie będę mógł przyjść. — I probably won’t be able to come.

Emotion and emphasis: przecież, właśnie, no, -że

These add feeling or highlight a word. Przecież — “but surely, obviously!”, właśnie — “exactly / just now”, -że makes a command more insistent.

ParticleMeaningExample
przecieżbut… / after allPrzecież ci mówiłem!
właśnieexactly; just (now)Właśnie skończyłem.
nowell, come onNo chodź już!
-żeemphasis (come on!)Chodźże tu!
akuratjust, exactly thenAkurat wychodziłem.
obylet’s hopeOby nie padało!

Examples in sentences:

  • Przecież mamy dziś wolne! — But we have the day off today!
  • Właśnie o to chodzi. — That’s exactly the point.
  • Akurat dzwonisz, kiedy jadę. — You’re calling just as I’m driving.

How much: tylko, aż, dopiero, nawet, też

Tylko simply means “only”. Aż means “as much / as long as” — more than expected. Dopiero means “only, not until” — later or less than you would like: dopiero o dziesiątej — not until ten.

ParticleMeaningExample
tylkoonlyMam tylko dziesięć złotych.
ażas much as, a wholeCzekałem aż godzinę.
dopieronot until, only justPrzyjdzie dopiero o dziesiątej.
nawetevenNawet szef nie wie.
też / także / równieżtoo, alsoJa też pracuję w sobotę.

Examples in sentences:

  • Pracuję tu dopiero tydzień. — I’ve only been working here a week.
  • Za pokój płacę aż tysiąc złotych. — I pay a whole thousand złoty for the room (a lot!).
  • Nawet nie wiem, gdzie to jest. — I don’t even know where it is.

Time: już and jeszcze

With a negative the meaning shifts: już nie — “no longer”, jeszcze nie — “not yet”.

ParticleMeaningExample
jużalreadyJuż jestem.
jeszczestill, yetJeszcze pracuję.
już nieno longerJuż nie pracuję w magazynie.
jeszcze nienot yetJeszcze nie skończyłem.

Examples in sentences:

  • Już wychodzę! — I’m leaving now!
  • Czy jeszcze pan tu pracuje? — Do you still work here?
  • Już nie mieszkam w hostelu. — I no longer live in a hostel.

Też, także, również

All three mean “too / also”. Też is colloquial and never starts a sentence; także and również are neutral and more formal: Również proszę o kontakt.

Nie is a particle too

The most important particle is nie. When it is written together or apart, and why nic nie wiem has two negatives, is covered in “Negation in Polish”.

Where the particle goes

A particle stands before the word it refers to, and moving it changes the meaning: Tylko ja wiem — only I know (nobody else); Ja tylko pytam — I’m only asking (nothing more).

Common mistakes

  • Pracuję tu tylko tydzień vs dopiero tydzień — similar, but dopiero adds “I’ve only just started”.
  • Już nie wiem means “I no longer know”, not “I don’t know yet” (jeszcze nie wiem).
  • Też ja at the start is wrong; say Ja też.
  • Chyba tak means “I think so / probably yes”.
