Lesson 9. The Conditional in Polish (Tryb warunkowy)

The conditional is “I would do”, “I’d like”, “if I knew”. You need it in Polish more often than you might think: it is how you ask politely at the urząd, say “I’d like to make a doctor’s appointment” or give a colleague advice.
The good news: if you know the past tense (lesson 6), half the work is done. The conditional is simply the past form plus by with a personal ending.
How to form the conditional
Take the past form for “he / she / they” and add -by- plus the personal ending: zrobił + bym → zrobiłbym, zrobiła + bym → zrobiłabym, zrobili + byśmy → zrobilibyśmy. As in the past tense, gender shows in the word itself.
| Person | Ending | Man / men | Woman / women |
|---|---|---|---|
| ja | -bym | zrobiłbym | zrobiłabym |
| ty | -byś | zrobiłbyś | zrobiłabyś |
| on / ona / ono | -by | zrobiłby | zrobiłaby (ono: zrobiłoby) |
| my | -byśmy | zrobilibyśmy | zrobiłybyśmy |
| wy | -byście | zrobilibyście | zrobiłybyście |
| oni / one | -by | zrobiliby | zrobiłyby |
Examples in sentences:
- Zrobiłbym to dzisiaj, ale nie mam czasu. — I’d do it today, but I don’t have time.
- Na twoim miejscu zadzwoniłabym do agencji. — If I were you, I’d call the agency (said by a woman).
- Chętnie pojechalibyśmy nad morze. — We’d love to go to the seaside.
- Dziewczyny wolałyby pracować razem. — The girls would rather work together.
The verbs you need most
Only verbs that are irregular in the past tense are irregular here (mógł, szedł, wziął). If you know the “he” form, you know the conditional.
| Infinitive | Past (on) | Conditional: I (man) | Conditional: I (woman) | Conditional: they (men) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| być | był | byłbym | byłabym | byliby |
| mieć | miał | miałbym | miałabym | mieliby |
| chcieć | chciał | chciałbym | chciałabym | chcieliby |
| móc | mógł | mógłbym | mogłabym | mogliby |
| iść | szedł | poszedłbym | poszłabym | poszliby |
| woleć | wolał | wolałbym | wolałabym | woleliby |
| pomóc | pomógł | pomógłbym | pomogłabym | pomogliby |
| wziąć | wziął | wziąłbym | wzięłabym | wzięliby |
Examples in sentences:
- Byłbym wdzięczny za szybką odpowiedź. — I’d be grateful for a quick reply.
- Mogłabym zacząć od poniedziałku. — I (woman) could start on Monday.
- Czy miałby pan chwilę? — Would you have a moment?
The movable by: chciałbym = ja bym chciał
The particle by with its ending can detach from the verb and follow the first word of the sentence: Chciałbym zapytać = Ja bym chciał zapytać. This is common in speech and in questions: Co byś zrobił? (What would you do?), Gdzie byście pojechali? Never use by twice in one clause.
Examples in sentences:
- Ja bym tego nie podpisywał. — I wouldn’t sign that.
- Co byś zrobił na moim miejscu? — What would you do in my place?
- Tu byśmy mieli bliżej do pracy. — We’d be closer to work here.
Gdyby: “if (it were so)”
For unreal conditions use gdyby with a personal ending + the -ł form, and the conditional in the main clause: Gdybym miał czas, pomógłbym ci — if I had time, I’d help you. The endings -bym, -byś… attach to gdy, not to the verb: not “gdy miałbym” but gdybym miał.
| Person | gdyby… | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ja | gdybym | Gdybym wiedział… |
| ty | gdybyś | Gdybyś mogła… |
| on / ona / ono | gdyby | Gdyby szef pozwolił… |
| my | gdybyśmy | Gdybyśmy mieli auto… |
| wy | gdybyście | Gdybyście przyszli wcześniej… |
| oni / one | gdyby | Gdyby było ciepło… |
Examples in sentences:
- Gdybym znał polski lepiej, szukałbym pracy w biurze. — If I knew Polish better, I’d look for an office job.
- Gdyby nie padało, poszlibyśmy na spacer. — If it weren’t raining, we’d go for a walk.
- Gdybyś potrzebował pomocy, zadzwoń. — If you ever need help, call me.
Żeby: “so that / (want someone) to”
After chcieć, prosić, mówić and to express purpose: żeby + personal ending + the -ł form. Chcę, żebyś przyszedł — I want you to come. If the subject is the same, just use the infinitive: Przyjechałem, żeby pracować — I came to work.
Examples in sentences:
- Szef chce, żebyśmy przyszli o szóstej. — The boss wants us to come at six.
- Powiedz mu, żeby zadzwonił. — Tell him to call.
- Uczę się polskiego, żeby zdać egzamin. — I’m learning Polish to pass the exam.
Polite requests: “I’d like” instead of “I want”
In Poland “Chcę…” sounds blunt with strangers. In an office, at the doctor’s or with your boss, use the conditional:
| Direct (blunt) | Polite |
|---|---|
| Chcę zapytać. | Chciałbym / Chciałabym zapytać. |
| Pomóż mi. | Czy mógłbyś mi pomóc? |
| Proszę powtórzyć. | Czy mógłby pan powtórzyć? |
| Chcę pracować na rannej zmianie. | Wolałbym pracować na rannej zmianie. |
| Czy mogę wyjść wcześniej? | Czy byłoby możliwe, żebym wyszedł wcześniej? |
| Daj mi wodę. | Czy mogłabyś podać mi wodę? |
Examples in sentences:
- Chciałabym umówić się na wizytę. — I’d like to make an appointment (woman).
- Czy mógłby pan mówić trochę wolniej? — Could you speak a little more slowly?
- Prosiłbym o zaświadczenie o zatrudnieniu. — I’d like to ask for an employment certificate.
Stress
The stress stays where it was in the past tense: ZRO-bił-bym, CHCIA-ła-bym — third syllable from the end. In the plural it is the fourth: zro-BI-li-by-śmy, CHCIE-li-by-ście. Many Poles simplify this in speech, but this is the standard.
Common mistakes
- Chciałem and chciałbym differ: “I wanted” (past) vs “I would like” (request). In a shop always say chciałbym.
- Gdy miałbym czas… is wrong. The ending goes on gdyby: Gdybym miał czas…
- Gdybym bym…, ja bym chciałbym — double by. One clause, one by.
- Jakbym for “if” is colloquial. In writing or in an exam use gdybym.
