Meat Plant Worker, Opole: PLN 25.36–31.40 Net, Free Meals, Housing

A meat plant in Opole: one of the biggest producers of meat products in Poland. Workers are assigned to departments: poultry processing, processing, boning. Almost all operations are supported by automated machines, and the person does auxiliary work.

The conditions are not easy: up to +6°C indoors, smells, humidity, dust and lifting within BHP norms. On the other hand you are fed free and generously: soup, a main dish, and sausages and burgers on every shift.

Main duties

• poultry department: slaughter (men only) — hang birds on the line; gut chickens with machines; cut up carcasses into fillet, legs and wings; pack finished products; clean the workplace;
• processing department: prepare mince for sausages and burgers, fill sausages, hang them for smoking, slice and pack, clean and disinfect;
• other duties: work with hand pallet trucks, operate machines (packing, mixing).

Workers can be moved between departments.

Pay

• PLN 25.36 net per hour;
• PLN 31.40 net per hour for students under 26;
• bonuses are set by the plant individually.

Pay is made by the 10th of each month.

Work schedule

• 5 days a week (Mon–Fri); 2 Saturdays a month are compulsory working days;
• depending on the department 2 or 3 shifts: 01:00–09:00 and 09:00–18:50 (slaughter); 03:30–11:30 and 11:30–19:30 (boning); 06:00–14:00, 14:00–22:00, 22:00–06:00 (packing); 06:00–16:00 and 16:00–02:00 (sausage production);
• a 20-minute break.

Candidate requirements

• sanitary book: needed, they help get it for PLN 170 (deducted from pay), waiting 5–7 working days;
• carry your passport and work permit: security may check.

Forbidden: painted or long nails, false lashes, any jewellery (even wedding rings), taking products out without permission; smoking only in designated places. Before a shift you may be tested for alcohol: even a slight deviation is grounds for not being allowed to work.

Employment

Employment under an umowa zlecenie.

• the employer provides a warm hat, a fleece, rubber clogs, slippers, cotton gloves, warm socks and a clean white protective uniform (a smock and trousers);
• the white clothing is laundered by a service, the fleece and hat by the worker;
• there is a chance of direct employment after a certain time.

Housing

Housing is free, but utilities are PLN 750 net from your pay. If you live in your own housing you get PLN 150 on a grocery card.

Transport

On foot or by city transport at your own expense.

Additional

• meals are free: hot soup 4 times a week, a main dish twice, a bun or yoghurt on Thursday, unlimited sausages and burgers, bread, sauces, tea and boiling water on every shift; for the night shift warm soup and sandwiches;
• indoor temperature up to +6°C, smell, humidity, dust;
• it is recommended to wear warm personal clothing under the uniform (leggings, a tracksuit).
